History:
He was born in the fire nation during the great war. Since he was the son of a firebender and an earthbender he was a social outcast. One day his parents were killed by a group of radicals and his eyes were burned shut. The firelord, seeing an opportunity to gain public opinion took him in. He lived in the palace until he was 15. One day he disagreed with the firelord on a subject and was challenged to an Agni Kai. Even though he was blind, he would be taught a lesson.
That day changed his life. When he fought the firelord, he waney blind. Over the ten years he spent being blind, he figured out a way to be able to detect heat off of anything. In this way he could see the firelord and ended up winning, his skills striking fear into those who saw. He was soon banished.
Leaving with one of his servents/friends, he traveled to the northern water tribe where he met a waterbender. The fell in love, and for a while they lived in peace. One day she stumbled upon ancient text that talked about the healing powers of the spirit oasis. That night they went in, Mattias went into the water, and she healed his vision. For the first time in 12 years he could see. She was killed 2 weeks later in a fire nation raid.
He left the city and made contact within the white lotas where he worked his way up to being a grandmaster. Along that time he met up with another waterbender named Kiara Tunada, and they travelled together for a long time. (she turning out to be the avatar.) The rest is history.
