Appearance: He is average height and looks like any other person. However close up there is something about him that is different. His eyes reflect both a power and a knowledge that seems to go back for centuries. He has short dark brown hair that looks almost black.

Extra Clothing/Gear: A sword with an elegant pale silver blade. On the blade were carvings that
seem to make no sense. To the mind it seems to be random designs,
yet the subconscious of the mind will always see some form of pattern.
Hidden in the pictures were words written in the Old Script. His eyes
followed the length of the blade to the hilt. The sword is a hand and a
half sword, meaning the hilt is slightly larger, allowing the sword to
be wielded by one, or both hands. In contrast to the blade, the hilt is made from a black leather of a high quality. The pummel of the hilt is made from metal, treated so that it too is black in color. Inlaid
into the pummel is a dark red gem. Carvings circled out from the
stone, only visible when the light reflects off of it just right. The sheath is a
simple black color, hiding the complexity of the sword it carries.

Personality:For the most part he is gentle, and gets along well with the average person. Under stressful situation, his voice because much more gruff, and his pleasantries almost vanish. He fears nobody, but is warry of most people. He is not scared of death.

History:

Mattias was born during the great war in the heart of the fire nation. His parents were an earth bender and a normal fire nation citizen. When Mattias was 10, there was a great uprising among the fire nation citizens. They thought that the fire nation was pure, and should not be tainted by aliens from the other nations. One night a mob was formed and it swept through the town killing known families that had non-fire nation blood in it. Both of his parents were killed that night. The murderers for whatever reason didn't kill him, but burned his eyes shut to hide the fact that they were green instead of the fire bender brown.
Several days later the fire nation radicals were locked up and charged with murder, and later executed. Firelord Ozai then saw an opportunity for more political power. He decided to take in one of the orphans from the murders and raise him as his own son. He decided to pick the one that had the most obvious wounds from the mob, and so naturally he chose Mattias.
Over the next seven years Mattias was raised in the Firelord's palace as a prince with no blood relation. In a way Mattias replaced the hole in Ozai's heart that Zuko had left when he was banished. Everyone thought that Mattias would grow up, but forever be doomed to a cripple's life.
Through those years, one person saw Mattias in a different perspective. She saw that Mattias had the ability to firebend and took it upon herself to teach him all that she knew. It was difficult because he couldn't see. Mostly Mattias spent his days meditating and spending time with his teacher, and friend... Azula. That bond soon extended beyond friendship.
Then one fateful day Mattias discovered something that the FireLord was planning. Something he had been planning for a long time. The extermination of the Earth Kingdom. It was in the middle of a war council, the Firelord was talking about the future plans for the war, and he proposed the idea which the other generals agreed with. Mattias was the only person who stood up against it. And he knew he would pay a dear price for doing so. Knowing full well, he followed in Zuko's footsteps.
As expected the Firelord challenged Mattias to a Agni Kai. The following battle was stripped from the records because it revealed something completely unexpected. When Ozai entered the battle, he found that his opponit could not only defend himself with bending, but he could 'see' him somehow. Mattias had stumbled across the ability to sense heat in the air and use it to see. After a long battle, in which neither party seemed able to win, Mattias decided he had enough of it. In two great leaps, he jumped up into the air, then sent a blast of fire that propelled him out of the ring, where he slipped into the shadows.
In an attempt to avoid the price on his head that he knew would be there, Mattias left the Fire Nation and traveled to the Northern Water Tribe.
Some of the water benders were kind, others were harsh. He kept his bending to himself, and instead focused on mastering the sword, which he had great issue doing due to his lack of sight. During this time he met a young waterbending healer who was about his age. She had stumbled upon an ancient text telling about the mystical healing powers of the Spirit Oasis. Then, during the full moon she took Mattias to the oasis, and healed his eyes. For the first time in close to eight years, he could see again. The first thing he saw when his eyes open was the face of the waterbender. Two weeks later she died during a raid on a fire nation colony.
Since then he made contact with the white lotus, and returned to the fire nation to be ready. As the months went by, he slowly lost the ability to sense the heat around him and use it as sight, probably due to the fact that his primary senses were now operating.
